How to Choose a Remodeling Contractor

No matter the size of the project, a remodel is a big investment of your time, money, and energy. So, it’s essential to find the right contractor to execute your project on schedule, on budget, and all without stressing you out. There are a few key things to look for when shopping around for remodeling contractors.

How to Choose a Remodeling Contractor

1 | Ask your friends, family, and coworkers for referrals

Ask around about contractors who might have done projects similar to yours, why your contact liked working with the contractor, and the highs and lows of the project they tackled with that contractor. Was the contractor receptive to feedback? Were they timely with each piece of the project? Were they satisfied with the finished project?

2 | Dig around for credentials

There are a set of licenses from state and local municipalities that a contractor must have. They may also have designations from local organizations. If you see a credential you’re unsure about, do some research. As HGTV says, “not all certifications are created equal.”

3| Other questions to ask: the gut check(list)

Find answers to each of these questions:

  • Does the remodeler have permanent contact info? E-mail, phone, fax, cell, voicemail? Can you find the same info across the web and social media sites?

  • Does the remodeler have insurance?

  • Has their business/name been established for long?

  • Does the remodeler have roots or a reputation in the community?

  • What do online reviews have to say?

4 | Meet in person

Once you’ve narrowed down your list of candidates, arrange in-person (or at least face-to-face video) meetings. The right partner will be able to answer all of your questions. This Old House recommends that you “check in with your state's consumer protection agency and your local Better Business Bureau before you hire a contractor to make sure they don't have a history of disputes with clients or subcontractors.”

Now that you know how to choose a remodeling contractor, it’s time to do some research and find the best one in your area. Once you find the right partner, you’ll be able to make plans, set a payment schedule, and get to work.
